Think fast! (Or think slow!)

Research shows that each of us makes more than 35,000 decisions a day. What do we want to wear today? Should we go through that yellow light? When should I make a job switch? Our brains are constantly making choices, big and small.

In his bestselling book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, psychologist Daniel Kahneman dives into the two ways our brains handle the decisions in front of us:

  • System 1 thinking is when we go with our gut. We make fast, emotional choices in the moment
  • System 2 thinking is much more deliberative. We consider our options, think through potential outcomes, and go much more slowly.

This month, we are excited to explore these two methods of thinking as we read Kahneman’s “contemporary classic.”

Kahneman’s book was one of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 best books of the year, was selected by The Wall Street Journal as one of the best nonfiction books of the year, and has sold more than 2.6 million copies.

At Opportunity International, we know the importance of wise choices. We are constantly deciding how to grow, where to expand, and how to develop programs to better serve our clients. At the same time, hardworking entrepreneurs around the world often have to make impossible choices—deciding which child gets to go to school, whether to pay for health care or home repairs, and how to put food on the table.

Making choices is a universal human experience, and we look forward to exploring how to think, fast and slow, with you this month.
