Sustainability first: Adopting a greener lifestyle 

Global warming and climate change are two of the most pressing issues humanity is facing at the moment, and they won’t go away on their own. Shop responsibly 

Shopping is easier and much more accessible than it was only a couple of decades ago. With just a few taps on your smartphone screen, you can now purchase items from a store at the other corner of the world and have them delivered directly to your doorstep for a relatively small price. This innovation is stellar news for people dealing with mobility issues, and it is, of course, nice to be able to buy things you’ve been dreaming about for a long time. But for many people, the joy is only momentary, and the real thrill comes from over-consumption itself. That naturally means that it is short-lived, and the only way to truly get any enjoyment out of it is to keep buying even when you don’t need the items or don’t necessarily like them.

If you’ve found yourself trapped in this endless cycle as well, you need to break free and become a more conscious consumer. Every product you buy, including those that carry the sustainable level, requires resources to be created, and that translates into a carbon footprint. In order to be genuinely sustainable, make sure you get as much use as possible out of the items and goods you already own. When it comes to clothing, footwear, and accessories, you must make sure that you shop the items you like and avoid as much as possible to follow trends simply because a lot of people do and are talking about them.

Do your research about the brands you shop from to get a better idea of their environmental policies and protocols. If they don’t fit your standards, you should look for an alternative. When you shop, look for products that come with minimal packaging, are made from recycled materials, and have a manufacturing process that has a low impact on the environment. There’s also the option to just buy secondhand.


Ditch plastics 

Plastics never really go away and can survive in landfills for hundreds of years under the right conditions. When they break down, they create microplastics, an insidious material that can nowadays be found in drinking water and food and whose effects on the human body are not yet fully understood but rightfully assumed to be harmful. A lot of the plastics end up in the ocean, making up for a majority of marine debris that affects seals, turtles, and seabirds, which can even die as a result of ingesting the plastics or becoming tangled in them.

Not using single-use plastics is the first and most crucial step, so switch to a reusable water bottle to remain hydrated throughout the day. Don’t use plastic straws, and bring your own bag when you go shopping. In general, if you can purchase a plastic-free alternative of any given product, you should do so, as every piece counts, regardless of how small it is.


Travel well 

A large portion of the global greenhouse emissions are the result of traveling. Since fossil fuels power much of the transport sector, being more mindful about how you travel can greatly help the planet. For starters, you should avoid short car trips as much as possible. If you can walk or cycle to a destination, you should always opt to do so. Using public transport reduces emissions as well, and if you require air travel, make sure to fly economy, choose a flight with greater seating capacity, and don’t pack heavy luggage. All these choices are more sustainable in regards to fuel consumption.

When it comes to sustainability, even the smallest things matter, but it’s important to remain consistent in your pursuit of helping the environment and always look for new ways to make your lifestyle greener.
