401(k) Real Chat: Shlomo Benartzi

Retirement industry thought leaders answer three probing questions on critical issues, providing an open, honest and candid dialogue.

This week, we host UCLA Professor Shlomo Benartzi, author of “Save More Tomorrow” asking about “the good, the bad and the ugly” of auto-features:

  1. “The Good” – Auto features have had a huge impact on increasing participation and savings rates in DC plans. What made you think the DC market would benefit from the application of behavioral finance and did the results meet your expectations? What would you have done differently?
  2. “The Bad” – While auto-features have had a dramatic impact on the accumulation of assets, you’ve been vocal that the same applications may not be as effective in the decumulation phase. Could you explain why not and how do we get DC participants to engage, which has been a big challenge?
  3. “The Ugly” – You have some strong opinions on proposed laws that incorporate auto-features, which could be very damaging to some participants. Explain.

Let me know who else you would like to hear from and I will invite them to get real.
